FRANK - Overcoming a Lifetime of Learning Challenges

For years, Frank hid his lack of reading and writing skills from his coworkers. He kept a small black book and headed into a corner to look up words he needed to complete shift reports. Although this strategy allowed Frank to cope with his job, it held him back from increased responsibilities. When Frank’s supervisor recommended a promotion for his dedication and strong work ethic, his poor literacy skills made this impossible.

Troy

THE WONDERS OF TROY

On a breezy June afternoon, Troy quickly worked his way up the complicated rock climbing wall. At the top of the wall, barely winded by the ascent, Troy rang a bell signaling his victory. He rappelled down wearing a great big grin. Troy Anger was clearly in his element.

SEAN -  A Star of Hope

Growing up, Sean never understood why he sailed through certain tasks with ease, yet struggled tremendously with others. A star athlete who graduated top of his high school class, he found his learning challenges inconsistent and frustrating. The fast pace of college was particularly challenging. Spurred by his love of science and a dream of becoming a physician, Sean began college as a pre-med chemistry major, but found he could not handle the work load.

SARA  -  Confident and Prepared to Succeed

As an eleven-year old, Sara loved the clarinet and lacrosse, and she feels great about learning and school.  This is a big change from Sara’s start in school. In first grade Sara had difficulty pronouncing words correctly. She also had difficulty learning handwriting. At first, Sara was embarrassed and felt insecure in school. She thought it was her fault she could not learn at the same pace and in the same way as her classmates.
