Adolescent Literacy Across the Content Areas

The Stern Center for Language and Learning, and
Landmark College Institute for Research and Training present:

ARIVE: Advancing Reading in Vermont Education

ARIVE is an innovative, cost efficient way to deliver professional development to schools that is sustained, collegial, and evidence based. It helps schools build capacity to train future teachers. ARIVE offers an online graduate level course to teachers, grades 4 – 12, empowering them to deliver research-based reading strategies in the content areas. ARIVE provides enhanced training for school-based Literacy Leaders to facilitate team efforts and coach colleagues as they implement new approaches.

ARIVE online course

The ARIVE online course gives teachers the research-based knowledge they need to teach students how to read for meaning across content areas. Each lesson is linked to the Vermont Standards and Grade Level Expectations. Lessons include readings, activities, weekly discussions, and assignments. Video clips show Vermont teachers implementing the strategies in their own classrooms. The Reading Comprehension Cycle helps teachers plan effective lessons that integrate reading strategies with curricular content. Teachers can access ARIVE online anytime, anywhere they have an internet connection. No specialized technology is needed. Expert technical assistance is just a phone call or email away. ARIVE sustains and builds teacher knowledge over the academic year: each semester of ARIVE carries an optional three graduate credits (through Union Institute for additional cost.) ARIVE Literacy Leaders at each partner school receive enhanced, face-to-face training from Landmark’s experts.
